“Responsible Gambling” is a broad concept that refers to gambling which is conducted in a manner where the potential for harm associated with problem gambling is minimised. It respects the responsibility of individuals for their own actions, but also acknowledges a responsibility on the part of service providers.
Customers are encouraged to gamble within their means, not treat gambling as an activity to make money or to use gambling as a distraction from everyday problems. Some suggestions in helping achieve this are:
- Don’t think of gambling to make money; it’s a source of entertainment.
- Take regular breaks.
- Only gamble with money you can afford to lose, not money you have set aside for bills, i.e., set an amount you are prepared to spend and stick to it.
- Never chase your losses (gambling more and more to try recoup loses).
- Do not play under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Don’t gamble when you are depressed or upset.
What are some signs my gambling may be getting problematic?
- Being preoccupied with gambling or constantly thinking about gambling.
- Spending more money on gambling than one can afford.
- Lying to friends or family members about the extent of one's gambling.
- Attempting to win back lost money by gambling more.
- Neglecting important responsibilities such as work, school, or family obligations in favour of gambling.
- Borrowing money or stealing to finance gambling.
- Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when attempting to reduce or stop gambling.
